This workshop will equip participants with the basic knowledge of pain neurobiology, psychology and therapeutic agents, using an interactive case study and multimedia. This workshop is aimed at all allied health and general practitioners or anyone wishing to update their knowledge on the pathophysiology and treatment of pain.

Speakers: 

Malcolm Johnson (M.A.,DipClinPsych., MNZCCP) is a clinical psychologist who has worked with chronic pain as a researcher and clinician for nearly 30 years and is a past President of the New Zealand Pain Society. He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Auckland and directs a Health Psychology practitioner training programme as well as working clinically at The Auckland Regional Pain Service. He has researched a number of psychosocial influences on pain including attention, emotions and beliefs and is currently interested in pain and sleep.

Dr David Jones (FANZCA FFPMANZCA, Specialist, Southern District Health Board, Dunedin, New Zealand) is a Clinical Leader for Pain Service, Dunedin Hospital and Clinical Senior Lecturer University of Otago, New Zealand since 1984.  A Foundation Fellow (1999), examiner and immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. He supports the bio-psycho-social framework for assessing and managing pain, considering who is the patient with the pain as much as what pain condition(s) they present with.  Major interests: neurogenic pain and its management, best practice opioid prescribing, chronic pelvic pain and post surgical pain conditions.
 
Dr Stephen Leow, (Clinical Director, GP Axis, South Australia) is the chair of the RACGP Pain Management Specific Interest Group of the National Faculty of Specific Interests and the Chair of the Primary Health Group of the National Pain Summit. Dr Leow is also a member of the NeuP SIG of the IASP.


 

 

 

Dr Diarmuid McCoy is a graduate of the National University of Ireland University College Cork.  Following speciality training in Ireland he pursued a fellowship in pain medicine at Flinders Medical Centre South Australia.  He is now the Clinical Director of the Pain Management Unit at The Geelong Hospital and in private practice.  With a number of publications and book chapters he has delivered lectures and workshop in Europe Australia and Asia.  His special interests are neuropathic pain, cancer pain and pain related education.
