Physiotherapy in Pain Management - Afternoon Half Day Workshop

Fear, Pain and Movement
What it looks like, the underlying basis of it, how we measure it and practical strategies to address it in clinical practice…

Date: Sunday 13 March 2016

Time: 1.30 pm - 5.00 pm

This workshop is for physiotherapists, and will explore the issue of fear avoidance as seen in a range of clinical situations.

The construct of fear avoidance will be discussed, and then attendees will have to opportunity to explore specific approaches for managing fear avoidance in a clinical setting. 

Whilst this issue is often considered in the realm of chronic pain presentations, this workshop will have a strong focus on addressing fear avoidance in acute pain situations.

Speakers:

Sam Bunzli graduated from Otago University with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2000. She worked as a physiotherapist in New Zealand, the UK and Australia before completing a PhD at the School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Science, Curtin University in 2015. Her doctoral research was titled: “A prospective qualitative investigation of pain-related fear in people with chronic low back pain”. Sam is currently at the University of Melbourne, Department of Surgery conducting post doctoral qualitative research in the field of pain related cognitions and musculoskeletal pain.

Peter O'Sullivan is Professor at the School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Science at Curtin University, Perth, Australia. He has published over 150 papers with his co-workers, researching the development, prevention and management of musculoskeletal pain disorders in both adolescent and adult populations. In addition he works in clinical practice (Bodylogic Physiotherapy) as a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2005) in Perth, Australia. 


 

Rob Schütze is a Clinical Psychologist with a particular interest in helping people with persistent pain. He is the founder of Wisdom Health and focuses clinically on working collaboratively with physiotherapists, pain specialists, surgeons and GPs to provide interdisciplinary care for his clients. Rob has a focus on the use of mindfulness meditation in pain management, rooted in his own ongoing practice of meditation and yoga. He has taught Ashtanga Yoga for 15 years and owns The Yoga Space in Perth. Rob is also actively involved in research and teaching, having published in high impact international journals and collaborating on several ongoing research projects. He is an Adjunct Lecturer at Curtin University where he is also completing a PhD exploring metacognitive aspects of pain catastrophising.
