The introduction of a scholar position on the APS SPC will seek to provide an opportunity for high calibre APS trainees to participate in the committee for a fixed term appointment of 12-months (November 2018 - November 2019).
Through active participation in a range of SPC activities the appointee will contribute to the planning of the Annual Scientific Meeting, and they will gain invaluable experiences and skills with mentorship from senior pain researchers and clinicians on the SPC. The scholar appointee will no doubt find that this experience puts them in very good stead for a strong future career in pain research.
Applicants must be:
- A PhD student who has reached their confirmation milestone (i.e., in their second year or above)
- An APS member
- Participate in regular SPC discussions and planning activities for the APS Annual Scientific Meeting. Scholar must abide by SPC guideliens and attend >80% of SPC meetings.
- Review free paper and topical workshop abstracts under the mentorship of a full SPC committee member.
- Academic transcript
- Letter of support from main PhD supervisor
- A statement on the applicants PhD research (thesis title and overview of the aims, methods and key findings from the project to date; no more than 1 page)
- A statement (250 words) on why the applicant wishes to join the SPC, including the applicant’s relevant skills, what they hope to contribute to the committee, and what skills or outcomes they hope to achieve from the role
- Academic CV (4-page) outlining the applicants prior education, employment history for the past five years, and academic achievements and academic achievements and outputs (awards, publications, presentations, and funding)
- Contact details for two referees
Conditions of appointment
- Only one position will be available each year
- The appointment is for 12-months duration from face to face meeting (November to November), with overlap of scholars ending/commencing. This allows the appointee to participate in all phases of the conference planning activities.
- The appointee must have passed their confirmation of candidature
- The appointee must have the support of their primary supervisor
- The appointee must abide by the SPC guidelines and are required to attend >80% of the SPC meetings. If the appointee misses two or more consecutive meetings their membership will be reviewed.
