This seminar is designed to introduce the fundamental concepts of laser science, technology and safety to a range of medical professionals including physicians, nurses, aestheticians, biomedical technicians, administrators, safety management personnel and other interested healthcare providers. Clinical lasers of all wavelengths, applied to a variety of specialties, will be highlighted through lectures, discussions, and interactive sessions.

The Australian/New Zealand National Standard (AS/NZ 4173), Australian College of Operating Room Nurses (ACORN) Practice Standards and the International Standard (IEC 825) will be used as a basis for safety instruction.

PRESENTER Penny J Smalley RN, CMLSO

As a self employed consultant, Ms Smalley works with healthcare facilities, government agencies, industry and professional organisations to provide and maintain comprehensive clinical laser programs. Services include education and training, safety auditing, program planning and development, standards compliance and related support.

Ms Smalley represents ACORN (Australian College of Operating Room Nurses) to Australian Standards (4173), and is an appointed member of the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission).

 

On completion, seminar participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the fundamental concepts of laser science, biophysics, and laser tissue effects in current clinical use
  • Identify the components of commonly used laser systems, delivery devices, and accessory instrumentation
  • Determine hazards associated with healthcare laser systems, and appropriate control measures required of perioperative personnel
  • Discuss both current and emerging clinical applications of lasers in surgical and medical specialties
