International Speakers

Dr Tim Deer is the president and chief executive officer of The Center for Pain Relief, Inc. in Charleston, West Virginia. The Center for Pain Relief, Inc. treats more than 4000 chronic pain patients per month, many with unique conditions that require an algorithmic approach to their management.  He is a native West Virginian who received his medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine and where he currently holds the position of clinical professor of anesthesiology.
Dr Deer is the president of the West Virginia Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (WVSIPP) and has been elected to the position of President Elect of the International Neuromodulation Society (INS).  Dr Deer is a member of the board of directors of American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) and has served as faculty, moderator and presenter on many important subjects at many national and international meetings. 

Dr Leo Kapural, MD, PhD, is the Medical Director of the Chronic Pain Center at Wake Forest University Health Sciences in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Dr. Kapural completed residency at the Cleveland Clinic's Division of Anesthesiology and Critical Care in Cleveland, OH and Fellowship in Pain Management at the Cleveland Clinic. He was listed by his peers in the “Best Doctors in America.” He has published more than 150 journal articles and abstracts and 20 book chapters regarding his interests, which center on discogenic low back pain, visceral abdominal pain, and spinal cord/peripheral nerve stimulation.

 

Mr Nik Patel was appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at University of Bristol in 2005. He has been recognised for functional neurosurgical excellence with an MRC fellowship; awards from both the American and the European Association of Neurological Surgeons; and a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Examples of his interests and advancements in surgical techniques used for functional neurosurgery include: direct brain neurotrophic factor delivery for PD; deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode implantation under general anaesthesia; and evaluation and optimisation of brain and spinal targets for chronic pain, PD, intractable hypertension and treatment-resistant depression.

Dr Ali Rezai is the Associate Dean of Neuroscience and the Director and CEO of The Ohio State University Neurological Institute. He is the Past President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the largest neurosurgical society in the world, as well as the Past President of the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS), and the American Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ASSFN). Dr. Rezai’s clinical areas of expertise are the neurosurgical management of patients with Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, chronic pain, brain and spinal cord injuries, spasticity, as well as depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. He has published more than 150 articles and 40 book chapters, and serves on the editorial board of five scientific journals.  He has edited a book on surgery for psychiatric disorders and the two volume textbook,Neuromodulation. Dr. Rezai has been the Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-investigator on eight NIH grants as well as being the PI of the state of Ohio’s Neurotechnology Innovations Translator (NIT) Center.

National Speakers

Dr Leigh Atkinson is a Pain Medicine Specialist. He developed his interest in persistent pain while training in Edinburgh as a Neurosurgeon. He was later the Founding Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. In 1979 he co-founded a multi-disciplinary pain clinic at that hospital. He has a special interest in trigeminal neuralgia, pain of spinal origin and multi-disciplinary pain clinics.


Dr Toby Newton-John is a Clinical Psychologist at Northern Private Pain Centre in Sydney. He did his clinical training in Sydney, and PhD with the INPUT pain unit in London. When not at the pain clinic he is a Senior Lecturer and Acting Head of Discipline in the Graduate School of Health at University of Technology Sydney. He has published over 40 research papers, articles and book chapters on the psychology of chronic pain, with a particular focus on the social and family aspects of chronic illness. 



Dr Marc Russo is the Director of the Hunter Pain Clinic, Hamilton Day Surgery, Hunter Clinical Research and Co-Director of the Innervate Pain Management Program in Newcastle, NSW. He founded the Hunter Pain Clinic in 1999, Hamilton Day Surgery in 2001, Hunter Specialist Medical Centre 2003, Hunter Clinical Research in 2005.  He also founded NAPS (Newcastle Anaesthetic Peri-operative Services). Dr Russo is the founding member and immediate past President of the Australian Chapter of the International Neuromodulation Society. He is the current 2013-14 Secretary of the International Chapter of Neuromodulation Society and resides on advisory boards, scientific advisory boards and committees nationally and internationally.

 

Dr John Salmon is a Pain Medicine specialist in private practice. He is a medical director of PainCare multidisciplinary pain management service. Dr John Salmon have  25 year experience of Neuromodulation implant therapy, implanting around 35 patients per year. He published extensive retrospective neuromodulation outcome studies. 




Dr Geoff Speldewinde has specialist medical qualifications in Rehabilitation, Pain and Musculoskeletal medicine. Since 2001, he has operated an expanding private multi-disciplinary rehabilitation and pain medicine centre in Canberra that offers a range of evidence-guided treatment options for people with persistent pain problems.

 

 

Dr Paul Verrills practices full time interventional pain management and is a Director of Metro Spinal Clinic in Melbourne, Australia. He is a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Musculoskeletal Medicine and completed a Masters in Pain Medicine under Professor Bogduk at the University of Newcastle. He has also been awarded his International Fellowship in Interventional Pain Practice.
